Tattoo Studio Software & Tools: What You Actually Need (UK)

Updated June 2026 · 6 min read

A UK tattoo studio typically needs tools for booking, deposits/payments, stock and ink inventory, commission/chair-rent tracking, accounting (now Making Tax Digital), and - separately - compliance record-keeping. Here is what each is for and example providers. (Products below are examples, not endorsements; check current pricing and suitability.)

Do I need separate software for compliance and booking?

Some booking apps capture a consent form at the point of booking - but they are built to fill your diary, not to satisfy a council inspection. InkReady is the dedicated compliance layer you run alongside any booking tool, keeping consent, aftercare, infection-control and sterilisation logs audit-ready and GDPR-compliant. See our compliance software page.

Making Tax Digital (MTD) for the self-employed

Many tattoo artists are self-employed, so MTD for Income Tax matters: it is being phased in from April 2026 for sole traders with qualifying income over £50,000 (lower thresholds follow in later years). Affected traders must keep digital records and send quarterly updates using MTD-compatible accounting software. Confirm the latest thresholds and dates with HMRC.

Clinical waste contractors

Use a contractor that is a licensed/registered waste carrier with the Environment Agency (check their licence number), put sharps in UN-approved sharps bins, and keep your consignment/transfer notes. See our sharps & clinical waste guide.

The compliance layer for any setup

Whatever booking or payment tools you use, InkReady keeps your consent, sterilisation, hygiene, waste and training records inspection-ready and GDPR-compliant.

Frequently asked questions

Can my booking app handle compliance records too?
It can capture some consent, but booking apps are not built as a compliance audit trail. A dedicated tool like InkReady keeps the full record an EHO or insurer expects, and runs alongside whatever booking software you use.
Does Making Tax Digital affect tattoo artists?
Yes if you are self-employed and over the income threshold (phasing in from April 2026). You will need MTD-compatible accounting software and quarterly digital updates - check the current HMRC rules.
